	by our United States expert Paul Baderman The third largest of the Pacific Hawaian islands, it is where the US State capital Honolulu is located. The deep water port there, Pearl Harbour, is the base for the US Navy and still has associations with the attack that brought America into WWII - the submerged USS Arizona is a moving memorial. Formed from two volcanic peaks, it is also the home of perhaps the best known surfing beach in the world, Waikiki, thanks to local man ‘Duke Kahanamoku’ who popularised the activity as a sport. (Now, it’s seen as a little tame but is a great place to learn.) Honolulu is a big bustling city - the most populated in the State - but it’s somewhere to jump off from to the wonderful beaches and coves that scatter round the coast. Swim with dolphins, go sea-kayaking, dive and snorkel, go-below in a submarine … or just lie on golden sand and soak up the sun. Out of the water, you can learn to hula dance and feast from an underground oven pig-roast at a traditional ‘luau’ celebration at Paradise Cove. Slightly less touristy, you can hike or horseride in the rolling land off the coast and between the mountains - there’s some wonderful waterfalls.
