NiagaraFalls Travel Guide

by our Canada expert Terry Emery

Terry EmeryOK, statistics first, since they are impressive. There are actually three separate cataracts - Horseshoe, the biggest, on the Canadian side, American on the US side (although perhaps also better viewed across the border) and the smaller Bridal Veil. At peak times over 200,00 cu ft go over, 90% via Horseshoe whose drop is some 173 ft while the American height is around 100 ft, with massive boulders varying it. Seasoned travellers will insist that both Victoria and Iguazu are more spectacular but Niagara is certainly the most accessible being 20 minutes from Buffalo NY and a bare 80 miles from Toronto. The walks around the Falls are amazing (go behind the curtain of water with Cave of the Winds) but the boat approach, ‘Maid of the Mist’, is mind-blowing. Niagara has long been a honeymoon destination - your guess why is as good as ours - even Napoleon’s brother Jerome went. Then the countless, incredible stunts and performances. Blondin was the first tightrope crosser in 1859, with Maria Spelterini in 1896 the only woman (so far). She did it repeatedly, including blindfold, and drowned there in 1913. In 1901 Annie Taylor went over (with her cat) in a well-padded barrel and survived and there have been many other weird containers; Capt Webb, the channel swimmer, actually drowned there. For today’s visitors, a spectacular (dry) view can be obtained from the futuristic Skyline Tower complete with revolving restaurant.
