Ma'an Travel Guide

by our Jordan expert Paul Baderman

Paul BadermanMa’an, about 200 miles south of the Jordanian capital Amman and almost in the centre of the desert kingdom, was itself briefly in1920 the capital of the first king, Abdullah, the modern country’s founder. The home of the biblical Nabateans, it was they who founded the rose-red city of Petra that is probably the wonder-of-the world reason for most modern travellers to Ma’an. In the early part of the 20th century, it was also important as a station on the Hejaz railway constructed to ease the 40 day pilgrimage from Damascus to the Islamic holy places of Medina and Mecca. An agricultural region for the Nabateans and the reputed place of Moses’s brother Aaron’s death at Mount Hor, it is now predominantly hot, arid desert although there are many accessible points of interest as well as Petra such as the Crusaders’ castle at Shoubak; it is also of course classic Lawrence of Arabia territory.
