Public Holidays in Israel

If you plan to visit Israel, don't forget to consider the dates of the Israeli national, public or bank holidays.

Israel has 9 official holidays during the year, with Independence Day being observed by all citizens and the others being Jewish religious holidays which non-Jews may disregard.

The Jewish religious day is Saturday and begins at nightfall on Friday until nightfall on Saturday and most public services and shops close between these times. Muslim and Christian holidays are also observed by their respective populations in various areas.

Only the first and last days of Passover and Sukkot are national holidays, but there may well be some closures and disruption on dates in between.

Note that Hanukkah is a school holiday only with businesses opening as usual. Also note that Jewish festivals always commence on the evening before the date of the actual holiday.
