Luxor is a ‘modern’ city - only a couple of thousand years old - built on the site of a far older Egyptian capital Thebes. It is, now, arguably the greatest concentration of ancient monuments and wonders that has survived to today. Just listing the marvels on both sides of the Nile there, some 500 miles south of Cairo, is a compelling argument for it being a ‘must-visit’ destination for travellers. On the east bank lie the great temples of Karnak and Luxor with its Rameses II statue, featured on a million postcards; the two are linked by the avenue of sphinxes. On the west is the immensely impressive Valley of the Kings, the less famous but remarkable Valley of the Queens and numerous other temples and tombs. Thebes was the city of the sun god Amun-Ra, featured in and on many of the monuments, although for the modern visitor a memorable spectacle is provided by the night-time illumination of many of the sites.
