AbuSimbel Travel Guide

by our Egypt expert Terry Emery

Terry EmeryBuilt some 3,500 years ago Abu Simbel is a complex of two massive temples built into the face of rock cliffs overlooking the Nile. It was created in his lifetime to commemorate the great Pharoah, Rameses II and his queen, Nefertiti, as well as to create an imposing entrance on the southern border of Nubian Upper Egypt. The centuries almost covered the complex in sand, until re-discovered and excavated in the early 19th C. Abu Simbel attained worldwide attention with the planned construction of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960’s which would have submerged the entire complex with the rising waters of Lake Nasser. After fierce international debate and many differing plans, the temples were eventually successfully moved in immense multi-ton blocks some 65 metres higher and 200 metres back from the original riverside. Now, a compelling location for visitors to Egypt, it can be ‘done’ with a fly-in day trip but is infinitely better seen via a Lake Nasser cruise, which spends time overnight, thus permitting the glorious sight of the temples at dawn, facing the rising sun that was so important to the original builders.
