Coventry Travel Guide

by our United Kingdom expert Terry Emery
Terry EmeryOn the southern edge of the industrial Midlands, with a declining automotive history, Coventry is a miracle of restoration centred on the awe-inspiring Cathedral. Flattened and fire-stormed in a devastating air-raid on the city on 1940, the subsequent recreation offers a host of reasons for visitors of any nationality to visit and ponder. The architect, Sir Basil Spence blended the new with the ruins of the old to striking effect. Contributions by Graham Sutherland, John Piper, Jacob Epstein and Elizabeth Frink and others to the fabric are a source of aesthetic marvel but the theme of reconciliation is the most moving. The first cathedral on the site was founded by Lady Godiva, wife of Leofric, whose ‘ride’ was appropriately to ease the burden of the poor.
