Side Travel Guide

by our Turkey expert Paul Baderman
Paul BadermanSide is an extremely ancient city on what is now Turkey’s Turquoise Coast, southwest of Antalya. Its history goes back around two millennia and it occupied an important role in successive empires including Alexander the Great’s, Ptolemeic Egypt, the Roman, Ottoman and various intermediate kingdoms. The name means ‘pomegranate’ and reflects the agricultural trading importance of the area. Now the town’s primary occupation is tourism, along with near-neighbour Manavgat. There are many monuments and a well-founded museum - along with the beaches (one of the ‘Top Ten in Turkey’), guaranteed sun, good food and entertainment of a Mediterranean resort, all intertwined to offer ancient and modern to the traveller.
