Istanbul Travel Guide

by our Turkey expert Paul Baderman
Paul BadermanA city of some twenty names over the centuries, ‘capital’ of Roman and Ottoman empires and the Christian church at times, the point at which two continents meet, no-one could deny that Byzantium/Constantinople/Stamboul is a place of history. For modern travellers and their countless predecessors it is a fascinating blend of contrasting cultures. The Blue Mosque and the Topkapi Museum illustrate this, while the modern marvel of the Bosphorus Bridge actually joins Asia with Europe. The traditional Grand Bazaar competes for visiting shoppers with the design-prize-winning Kanyon Mall; the former cathedral Hagia Sophia draws countless cameras, along with the ruins of the chariot racers Hippodrome. And after a hard day’s sightseeing, there’s relaxation to be had in one of the many ‘Hammams’ or Turkish Baths.
