Romania Travel Guide |

As Europe continues to discover the Black Sea as an attractive and less-developed alternative to the Med, Romania has only recently been added to the ‘new’ Riviera. The long miles of glorious beaches include resort towns such as Mamaia and Constanta and boast an enviably consistent climate. But Romania is an ancient kingdom with much more for the tourist to wonder at. Or perhaps shudder slightly at the romantically menacing castle of Bran, perched high on a rock pinnacle and the classic gothic model for the eyrie of the vampire count, Dracula himself. (It can be disconcerting to discover that it is indeed in the real region of Transylvania.) There are many such medieval castles in the region as well as remarkable painted monasteries with colorful exterior murals and ancient wooden churches. The mighty Danube dissects Romania, entering in the north-east through the ‘Iron Gate’ gorge and finally spreading into the Black Sea through the vast Danube delta – an ornithologist’s paradise with millions of pelicans over-wintering. The capital Bucharest also lies on the river and is rapidly emerging from the Ceausescu ‘winter’ to revive its 1900’s image as a ‘petit Paris’ with traditional culture and modern popular music featuring in a lively arts and nightlife scene.
