Tavira Travel Guide

by our Portugal expert Conrad Freethy
Conrad FreethySpanning both sides of the River Rio Gilao, Tavira is a town rich in history with an 8th century Moorish castle overlooking twisting streets, picturesque houses, & pretty churches. An excellent choice of bars & restaurants runs along the riverfront and ends at a beautiful main square beside a reconstructed Roman bridge. For sunseekers and watersports enthusiasts, a short ferry ride takes you to the huge sandy expanse of Ilha de Tavira where you can enjoy either the bracing Altantic surf or the calmer "lagoon side" waters of this beautiful sand bar island.
