Funchal Travel Guide

by our Portugal expert Conrad Freethy
Conrad FreethyA few hundred miles out into the Atlantic, the volcanic island of Madeira was one of the first fruits of Portugal’s naval-based empire from the early 15thC. The influence of the Gulf Stream gives it a wonderful year-round equable climate making it a natural destination for tourists especially in the European winter. Funchal, the capital, is a handsome town with a sparkling seawards waterfront, and pleasantly wooded mountains giving shelter behind. Fine avenues hold grand shops and boutiques, as well as excellent cafés and restaurants - the Madeira wine industry is thriving and assessing the differing vintages is a highly recommended pastime. Funchal’s New Year fireworks display is claimed as ‘best anywhere’ while the shrovetide carnival rivals Rio.
