Valletta Travel Guide

by our Malta expert Conrad Freethy
Conrad FreethyMalta’s heavily fortified capital with its 2 miles of ramparts was once the dominion of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem who, in theory at least, still retain a claim to sovereignty under International Law. Indeed, Valletta’s grid like layout belies a rich history that is reflected in the number of churches, palaces & museums that sit alongside the modern shops, restaurants & markets. The 16th century Grand Master’s Palace was one of the first buildings in Valletta and as today’s House of Representatives of Malta it remains one of the most impressive. Valletta’s Grand Harbour, long an important naval base and seaport, is also worth admiring particularly when viewed from the beautiful Upper Barrakka Gardens.
