Sardinia Travel Guide

by our Italy expert Paul Baderman
Paul BadermanCloser to French Corsica (across the Strait of Bonifacio) than the Italian mainland, Sardinia is almost a country in its own right - it’s the second largest island in the Mediterranean. Over the centuries it was repeatedly an independent kingdom absorbed by a succession of empires, and still has its own widely spoken language. Now an immensely popular tourist destination - from highly exclusive complexes on the Costa S’meralda to large holiday villages with superb beaches and trails for nature-lovers. The island has around 1,000 miles of coastline - almost all unspoilt and stunningly beautiful. The constant change of rulers has left an attractive blend of varied Mediterranean cultures and food - and, yes, it is where sardines come from.
