MountVesuvius Travel Guide

by our Italy expert Paul Baderman

Paul BadermanEurope’s most recently active volcano (1944), Vesuvius overlooks the ‘modern’ town of Naples and the ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum that were overwhelmed by the catastrophic eruption of AD 79. Originally formed 18,000 to 20,000 years ago, Vesuvius has erupted many times in recorded time and earlier, with the remarkable aspect of the destruction of Pompeii being a documented eye-witness report, by Pliny, as well as the excavated ruins that are now easily visited. The rapidity of the devastation left many events locked in time. In the geological mini-seconds of the past 60-odd years, only the occasional vent of steam has occurred and the very edge of the crater is accessible to the bold with short memories.
