Como Travel Guide

by our Italy expert Paul Baderman
Paul BadermanThe town they named a lake after, Como was founded by the Romans in the 1st century BC. Until recently supported by a thriving cotton industry, the town relies increasingly on tourism and benefits from offering direct access by train to both Milan (40 minutes) and Zurich (4 hours). The highlight of the old town must be the Piazza Duomo where a multitude of al fresco restaurants allow you to admire the impressive cathedral. For a rather more panoramic view, hop on the funicular railway up to the hilltop town of Brunate where a sunny day will present you with an awe inspiring alpine landscape.
