TheGreekIslands Travel Guide

by our Greece expert Paul Baderman
Paul BadermanThere’s something about the idea of beaches on islands, whether South Seas, Caribbean, or Mediterranean, that appeals so much more than mainland coastal strips. And nowhere has more islands (over 6,000), or greater appeal, than Greece. To the west , the Ionian Sea with Kefalonia, Zakynthos and Paxos; to the east and south, the Aegean, stretching across to Turkey, with the large groups of the Cyclades and Dodecanese. And that’s leaving aside the bigger individual islands of Crete, Corfu, Rhodes. Without exception they offer holiday paradise. Crystal-clear sparkling sea, mile after mile of golden sands (with a notable handful of black), family beaches and exhilarating sub-aqua and watersports centres. And if you can bear to leave the shore, strolls through herb-fragrant countryside or challenging mountains. Above all, the islands offer choice. Total peace and quiet? you’ve got it; rave-up club settings? - it’s there, including a flourishing gay scene; safe beaches for toddlers? of course; noisy bars for teens? ditto. Sophisticated shopping, ‘real Greece’ tavernas, flotilla sailing, proper ports for yachties, traditional food, burgers and chips? You bring your preferences and the islands can match them.
