Calvi Travel Guide

by our France expert Paul Baderman
Paul BadermanAt the north-west corner of Corsica, Calvi is the main town of the Balagne region. It is surrounded by olive, lemon, orange and fig trees that combine with the island’s prevailing herb scents to provide an aromatic atmosphere for gastronomes to drool over. Allegedly the birthplace of Columbus, the town has a 15thC citadel whose ramparts provide a pleasing stroll and overview. Safe, sandy, beaches are backed by pine trees, and you can take a (weekly) mini-voyage to island capital Ajaccio. The harbourside, with a palm-lined promenade, has good cafes and restaurants and a not-too-raucous nightlife - there’s a jazz festival in June.
