Alped'Huez Travel Guide

by our France expert Paul Baderman
Paul BadermanHigh in the Rhône-Alpes (at around 2000m+), in the ski region of Grandes Rousses, the wonderful ski and boarding facilities of Alpe d’Huez are enhanced by predominantly south-facing slopes, giving exceptional sun hours. The winter attractions are almost eclipsed, however, by the village’s fame as the climax of what is regularly the most gruelling stage of cycling’s Tour de France. (The two combine neatly with ski-lifts being available mid-summer to transport Tour enthusiasts to the peak finish line.) From the ski-slopes, the authorities claim that almost 20% of all France is visible - including spectacular views of Mont Blanc.
