Sarajevo Travel Guide

by our Bosnia Herzegovina expert Terry Emery

Terry EmerySarajevo was the scene of the assassination of the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand that sparked the flames of the first world war. Latterly the internecine strife that followed the break-up of Yugoslavia still evokes dreadful images. And yet Sarajevo is so magnificent a city that the peaceful present makes a visit immensely rewarding. Surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery – Sarajevo hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics – the city also boasts prestigious international Film and Jazz Festivals and a remarkable architectural array of mosques, Orthodox and Catholic churches.
