MarigotBay Travel Guide

by our St. Martin/St. Maarten expert Paul Baderman
Paul BadermanThe amicably split Franco-Dutch island of Saint Martin/Sint Maarten, technically possesses a ‘capital’ for each side but the French version, Marigot, is the larger town with rather more going on. That’s if you actually want to do more than sprawl out on one of the superb beaches and resorts that dot the coastline of what is anyway a small, 36 sq km, Caribbean paradise in the Leeward Islands - remember ‘Leeward’ means sheltered. Not far away, but the better beaches including a number of nude/optional ones such as Orient Beach are across the island from the town. Since the ‘other’ capital the Dutch Philipsburg, has perhaps a little more nightlife (there are tremendous shore-side restaurants all round) border-crossing can be involved though formalities have to be the flimsiest in world travel. Marigot itself is extremely picturesque; ‘gingerbread’ houses and Creole ambience including a rambling market near and around the harbour that is packed with goodies from delicious fresh fruit to attractive skilled craft work - some fine batiks especially.
