Playa Pesquero, or ‘Fisherman’s Beach’, lies on the north-east coast of Cuba in the state of Holguin. It is now essentially a beach-holiday resort dominated by the largest 5-star hotel on the island - six (good ) restaurants, five bars, including a ‘swim-up’ one in the massive free-form swimming pool (who needs the ocean?), beautiful gardens. A real plus point is that, despite its size, no building rises above two stories. In fact, the resort is on the pleasantly named Orange Bay - Bahia de Naranjo - and the swimming, diving, sailing, fishing, and other water-sports are excellent. Despite all the energetic recreation available, the resort is very popular for sunshine weddings and honeymoons. (Is it appropriate to mention that Cuba catches the occasional Caribbean hurricane in season?) The bay has a good National Park of the same name fringing it and the similar style resort of Guardalavaca, with smaller hotels, is nearby.
