GeorgeTown Travel Guide

by our Cayman Islands expert Terry Emery

Terry EmeryGeorge Town (note the separate words) is the capital of the Cayman Islands in the West Indies. Situated on Grand Cayman, the largest of the three in the group, it is where the tourists arrive but, equally important to the local economy, is also where the substantial off-shore financial industry is based. Visitors come daily for duty free shopping, by tender from the cruise ships that call regularly, as well as those who spend a little longer in the relaxed and laid-back environment that the island offers. George Town adjoins the precisely named ‘7 mile beach’ which stretches for … well you guess. Typical Caribbean soft coral sand, it’s backed by a many of the excellent hotels and restaurants. There are terrific scuba and snorkelling facilities plus glass-bottom boats and even submarine trips.
