AirlieBeach Travel Guide

by our Australia expert Conrad Freethy
Conrad FreethyThe majority of visitors actually come to Airlie Beach on Australia’s Queensland coast with the intention of leaving it. It is a very pleasant town but is probably most renowned as the best mainland departure point for the amazing Great Barrier Reef. The Reef, mostly surrounded by a carefully protective National Park, is within the Whitsunday Island group, named by Capt. Cook. Stretching for over 1,500 miles, and actually hundreds rather than a single giant reef, it is a coral wonderland of formations and marine life; both are at risk (people, storms, and natural environment such as coral-destructive starfish) but happily prove resilient. In or on the water is obviously the best way to view the reef’s marvels and there are countless craft and arrangements from glass-bottom boats to dive trips. There are also aircraft and helicopter flights. There are a number of resorts actually in the Whitsundays and reef area but Airlie Beach itself has much to recommend it for those content with day-trip reef visits. It is a haven for sailors with excellent facilities, sea conditions and areas to explore for cruising or dayboats. Sky diving, horse riding, rain-forest treks, beach weddings are all well-catered for too.
