Hanoi has just had a birthday, its 1,000th since you ask, although there has been some kind of settlement here for at least 2,000 years more. Vietnam has been shaped by constant waves of invasion and occupation with China, Japan, France and the USA having their input. A surprising result is that the people, many wearing the traditional Ao Dai, are among the friendliest and most welcoming a traveller can find, proud of their country, culture and cuisine and ready to share them . Like much of the region, religious influences are strong and the former N. Vietnam capital is richly endowed with many striking temples and pagodas. The city is on the Hoan Kiem Lake and the water plays a large part in its life from restaurants to markets. (If you get the chance, don’t miss the unique ‘Water Puppet’ shows - almost literally unbelievable). What isn’t on the water is on the streets, from night markets to the almost unbearably appetising aromas of food vendors (look for a queue of locals to choose the best). The Ho Chi Minh mausoleum is impressive whatever your politics, and a great short excursion is about 50 miles to the Perfume Pagoda collection, set in and among limestone caves, and deemed one of the most beautiful places in the country.
