Cochin Travel Guide

by our India expert Paul Baderman

Paul BadermanCochin (or Kochi) is the main city and port of the lovely South-West Indian state of Kerala. Its long history as a trading port with the Far East and Arabia - and later Europe - have created a multi-cultural environment, civilised and relaxed and welcoming to visitors, helped by its small size - by Indian standards (1 million pop.) As well Arab, Chinese and Malay influences, successive colonial governments of the Dutch, Portuguese and British have had their effect, from architecture to food. Yet one of the charms of the place is to spend time on one of the fine beaches and then pick up your evening meal of ultra-fresh seafood, cooked to order at a beachside shack pretty well as locals have done for centuries. A deep inlet bay creates a kind of delta that is dotted with islands and a boat trip through the backwaters is a fascinating non-standard outing. There are several good game reserves reachable from Kochi, while Mangalavanam is a superb protected bird sanctuary right in the heart of city. Unsurprisingly, there are many temples of just about every religion from Catholic to Jain with one of the most interesting being the Cheraman mosque - built and decorated in the style of a Hindu temple.
