Hammamet Travel Guide |

Hammamet is probably Tunisia’s leading “when we first came here, there was only …” quote provoker. An extremely ancient desert-edge village became the fore-runner of ‘modern’ tourism, with the first beach-side hotels created in the 1960’s. Big but … it has survived the process remarkably well with mostly low-rise development and the town still surrounded by agriculture. Even the hotels mostly eschew high-rise and there are superb single-story, built-in-a-garden examples. Being on a deep bay, the long, golden beaches are south-facing and offer all any sea, sun ‘n sand seeker could wish for, including young family safety. You won’t now find traditional Tunisia here but if you want to combine seaside and culture, it’s an easy expedition base for historic locations as Kairouan, Tunis itself and Nabeul. The latter produces magnificent world-renowned pottery and is the site of a weekly camel market where, even if tourists can outnumber the camels, the bustle and bargaining are real. Tip - take photos at a respectful distance; camels are contenders for the world’s nastiest animal title.
