Dodoma Travel Guide |
 |
by our Tanzania expert Terry Emery
Since 1996 Dodoma has been the capital and seat of government of Tanzania, despite being significantly smaller and less commercially important than Dar es Salaam on the Indian Ocean coast. Dodoma is pretty much in the centre of the country, in a pleasant upland region, with a good climate. It was originally a major stopping point on the overland caravan route from Lake Tanganyika to the coast and subsequently an equivalent rail junction. The city is surrounded by rich agricultural land that grows much of the country’s produce; it is also the setting for a fast-burgeoning wine industry that is rapidly increasing in both volume and quality reputation. At present the airport cannot be used by international flights and most of the tourist destinations such as games reserves are more easily reached from Dar es Salaam or Kilimanjaro in the north - it may be significant that the legislature itself only resides in Dodoma for a little over half the year.
