PortLouis Travel Guide |

Mauritius is the epitome of all you could dream about as a tropical paradise. Set 1,000 miles into the incredible blueness of the Indian Ocean, there are just enough cooling breezes to create an idyllic climate, with virtually ‘wall-to-wall’ beaches all round the island. And beyond the super-white sands there are encircling reefs to make it a diving paradise. The capital Port Louis was developed by the French in the 17th C. as a harbour, en route to the Indies and has retains many French elements (notably in a creole fusion cuisine). The city is a political and busy commercial centre as well as being a starting point for many beach tourists (the airport, however, is on the other side of the island). Well worth spending some time here when/if the beach palls - there’s a lively market, the Caudan Waterfront is a lot of fun with great cafes, there’s a racecourse, and a beach (Volunteer) which hosts flocks of King Penguins.
