by our Mauritius expert Conrad Freethy
Despite Mauritius‘s mainly French connections, the name of this charming village on the west coast comes from a Dutch phrase meaning ‘flat’ - as the beach and hinterland are. This coast, being on the island’s leeward side has arguably the ‘best’ beaches, and certainly is the side that offers the outstanding coral reef diving sites. The area was among the first for current-day tourism, developed by locals as much as ‘international’ corporations, and has everything you could need for a relaxed-but-every-amenity vacation. Even the beach cafes provide ‘haute-cuisine’ eating.
