For a little-known town, Maun has arguably the most exotic airport in the world. You come in to Maun International on one of the big-airline giant jets … board one of the multitude of tiny few-seater craft that buzz around like gaudy butterflies … and head off into the archetypal African bush to alight, probably on a dirt-strip … before stepping into a dugout ‘mokoro’ canoe. For while Maun is a provincial capital (and has a ‘wild west’ frontier history) it is now the travel portal to the true heart of Africa - notably the wonderful mystery of the Okavango Delta, the river that ‘dies’ among the dunes of the Kalahari. There are tourist hotels and facilities in the rapidly changing town itself - but Maun is really a classic ‘start here’ destination.
