Gaborone Travel Guide

by our Botswana expert Conrad Freethy
Conrad FreethyThe thriving capital of Botswana, Gaborone (yes, you do pronounce the ‘e’) is a city custom-built for that purpose after independence in the 1960’s as being neutral territory in tribal terms. Situated on the Notwane River, it is Botswana’s largest city, the political, commercial and cultural centre, and increasingly offers tourists a mix of tradition and modernity. There are several good game parks within reach although for dedicated wild-lifers larger, more dramatic regions such as Chobe or Okavango are more rewarding. The city is lively, with a colourful friendly people and, of course, the home of Alexander McCall Smith’s ‘Ladies Detective Agency’ characters - you can enjoy a good tour of the locations that also shows you many aspects of Botswana and Gabarone life.
