 A river that goes nowhere. The Okavanga never makes it to the ocean it’s heading for; it breaks up and disappears into the sands of the Kalahari, home of the San or Bushmen, that stretch to the African west coast. But the Delta provides some of the richest safari experiences imaginable. Fly into Maun, transfer to a light aircraft, step from bush landing strip into a hollowed-out mokoro canoe, and be paddled to your tented camp. Now you’re in the real Africa. And after a hard day’s wild-life watching, (Botswana is brilliant at combining land and river safaris) listen to the tiny reed frogs’ chinking, just like the ice in your pre-prandial drink. Then again, Chobe has some of the best sited and equipped lodges on the continent. An immense national park, named for the river that runs throughout, ‘Big Five’ sightings go without saying (Chobe has some 50,000 elephants alone) and the Aardvark to Zebra range of animals and superb birdlife will swamp the largest camera memory card. Unlike some of the more popular reserves, there is space in Botswana for everyone, so your sightings won’t immediately be obscured by a laager of 4WD’s.
